December 6, 2017 | 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm | CETLS, Room S510D
A short presentation and longer discussion around researching our online pedagogy as well as thinking about ways to enrich the culture of learning in the online classroom. We’ll be joined by Robin Isserles (Social Sciences), who has been teaching online since 2004. In 2009, she participated in a BMCC Scholarship of Teaching and Learning program, where she had the opportunity to conduct research on her online Sociology class. We’ll discuss her resulting article, “Fostering Student Engagement: Creating a “Culture of Learning” Online,” in which Robin addresses the ways in which distance learning offers possibilities for mitigating inequitable access to higher education — supporting community college students’ ability to take ownership of their learning, and encouraging them to think critically about what they are learning.
